Outside Visit to Dewsbury Fire Station. Mon 17th Oct

Luddites gathered at the new Dewsbury Fire Station Carlton Road Dewsbury.
The new Fire Station was opened 9th Nov 2015 a replacement of the Batley and Dewsbury
Fire Stations which are now closed.
Anthony Woodhead the Green watch Commander took Luddites onto the open floor of the station and showed the four vehicles the station has. Two Fire Engines one from each of the closed stations Batley and Dewsbury. A DIM vehicle and an Incident Response vehicle.
Anthony showed Luddites around the Green watch tender explaining all the equipment, and the many devices, pumps, tools, radiation monitoring equipment, car accident emergency tools and the equipment for dealing with flooding and more.
In the front seats he showed a computer that gives the location of fire hydrants and water sources
in any area.
He explained that in the past they had time to service the hydrants but now they don't have the spare time to do this with cut backs. A recent Leeds fire had needed a series of pumps from the Rive Aire to supply water to the fire.
Anthony wore the breathing equipment used for entering smoke filled buildings and explained how gases with air and water could lead to violent fire and the use of an high force air blower.
During this the second tender returned from its call out. Later this second fire engine was again called out with flashing lights. This showed the auto opening of the station gates and the Bradford Road flashing lights stopping traffic.
Anthony explained the uses of the DIM and IRU vehicle.
The DIM vehicle is to provide a capability to a major national incident, involving actual or potential chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) or hazardous materials (Hazmat).
The Incident Response Unit (IRU) is a mass decontamination and firefighter decontamination unit provided by the Government as part of a national strategy to deal with any incidents involving chemical or hazardous materials.
Anthony told of their close workings with other Yorkshire Fire Stations and how they cover each others stations when large fires take all resource's.
Anthony took questions from the Luddites as we toured the station, and this highlighted the vast cross section of the services that they now provide as well as fire fighting.
Luddites took to their cars and drove the short ride to Zucchinis where a late Italian meal was enjoyed.
