Marjorie McClure Traffic Learning System

Young students can learn about traffic systems in use on our roads without any danger

Road Crossing Teaching Aid

Chislehurst Rotary Club has been involved in giving to good causes locally, nationally and internationally for many years. Included in our programme of giving we have been donating to projects that support
Marjorie McClure School.

For those that don’t know, Marjorie McClure School is a specialist school, admitting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. For some time, we have run a variety of competitions for their students in Art and Photography, and we will look to add Writing in the near future.

Our latest donation has financed a Road Crossing Teaching Aid; this is to help their students learn how to cross roads safely. The road is about ¼ sized and helps students learn what pedestrian crossings look like, traffic lights, roundabouts and some road signs. Perhaps most importantly, they get to see how traffic moves in different directions at key points like junctions or roundabouts, something that is often confusing for us all. For
other students, using the concept of lanes and bays helps the wheelchair users learn how to be precise in their movements, ensuring that they stay inside lines and on pavements. For those who have problems with sight, they learn to feel the nobbles on the pavement at crossing points. All these points help the students prepare for the world outside school and understand where and how to cross the road safely. The full range of students from the youngest to the oldest use this teaching aid and as you can see from our photographs, the children enjoy this activity.
