Heritage House school is a Specialist School for learners who have severe learning needs, and they cater for learners aged 2-19. The school has two buildings broadly divided into stages from early years to post 19yrs. There are currently 118 on roll and in September 2024 the place number will be 134. The school is made up of 13 classes over the two sites. 40% of pupils have a diagnosis of Autism. Other needs include multi-sensory needs, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Hearing or Visual Impairment. The school’s values of personal responsibility and respect have been instrumental in developing an ethos where views, beliefs and differences are appreciated and given a voice.
That then is the factual basis of Heritage House School but on Wednesday 17th July 2024 the Rotary Club of Chesham were invited to visit Heritage House as a thank you for the work undertaken by some of our members at the school, particularly in the garden area. We were also joined by three members of the new Rotary Club of Chesham Valley so a total of 7 were present. The Head Teacher, Jacqueline Clearkin, showed us round the school and its facilities; describing the school’s ethos and how they try and prepare their pupils for life in the adult world. A delicious array of sandwiches and cakes were then provided having been prepared by members of staff and a pupil. It is only after learning more about the work undertaken at Heritage House, and meeting some of the pupils, that one begins to fully appreciate the importance of what they are doing for their young pupils and the patience and kindness shown every day.
