The Rotary Club of Chesham in conjunction with the recently newly formed Chesham Valley Rotary Club took the Christmas Float and Sleigh in and around the Chesham area during December 2024. Thanks are expressed to the people of Chesham for their wonderful support once again by their donations which will be supporting a number of local charities. Thanks also go to the groups which made it all possible by assisting Father Christmas and his helpers with the Sleigh touring the streets of Chesham and some of the nearby villages and on the occasions when the Sleigh and Santa were static in Chesham Broadway. A big thank you also goes to those who volunteered to tow the Sleigh, sometimes at short notice and of course lots of times it was during the darkness hours. It would not be possible to achieve what we have done without all the help.
As always there were many memorable moments, many relating to the joy of the children when they see the Sleigh and Father Christmas. We were especially pleased to fulfil some commitments which have become regular visits. Father Christmas once again met with the residents of the Portobello Place Care Home to wish them a Merry Christmas. Later the same evening he visited Lee Common and the The Lee where it seemed as if the whole of the village with many children and families were assembled by the Green and the Cock and Rabbit Inn. The licensee had very kindly arranged for refreshments outside where hot food, mince pies and mulled wine were available. Father Christmas even managed to enjoy the mulled wine without spilling it over his long white beard thanks to a straw.
For the third year we were able to visit Ballinger Village Hall on the evening of the Ukrainian Children’s Christmas Party. Thank you to Sarah and her team for the invite once again and for organising it all. There were 80 children and each one received a present from Santa courtesy of the organisers and a special chocolate lolly. The smiles and obvious delight at meeting Santa by every one of the children was heartwarming. A very humbling experience.
We were also able to visit Heritage House Special School this year. It was a wonderful occasion. The Sleigh with Father Christmas on board was driven up to the school and the children with parents, staff, carers and some local residents all lined up on the pathway for almost the length of the road. The Sleigh was driven very slowly past the children to the top of the road, turned round and then went past them again to the bottom of the road. It was so good and enjoyable for everyone including Santa but especially for the children that the Sleigh was turned round and went past them all twice more. A magically experience.
We were able to accept the invitation to take the Sleigh and Santa for one evening to Tesco in Amersham. It is a lovely opportunity to meet lots of children, parents and grandparents and have the time for photos of the children and Santa with the Sleigh close to the entrance. The youngest child of the month was seven weeks old and fast asleep and now the parents have a lovely photo for their baby’s first Christmas. There was one occasion when a lady on her way in to the store got a bit of a shock. The crowd of shoppers had diminished for a few moments and Santa was sitting down in his Sleigh. The lady was walking close to the Sleigh and not really paying much attention until Santa stood up and wished her a Merry Christmas. She jumped and screamed ever so slightly and said she thought Santa was a statue and didn’t realise he was real! Brilliant.
The final experience for the Sleigh and Santa for 2024 was to accept an invitation by Chesham United FC to appear at The Meadow on the last home match of the year on Saturday 21st December. We did attend and it was very enjoyable but I am not sure Santa will be invited again, Chesham United suffered a heavy loss.
Thank you again to everyone for your help and support and best wishes to all for a happy, peaceful and healthy New Year.
Rotary Club of Chesham.
