Weekly Meeting

Tue, Dec 4th 2018 at 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm

Speaker: Bob Thomson of Perth Kinnoull, introduced by Robin Rippin Welcome Team: Andrew Kennedy (Bottle) Sandy Green (Grace) Andre Hawryliw (VoT & Web report). Committee Report: International.

The club address on Tuesday 4th December was given by Bob Thomson, formerly of Fife Constabulary and currently of the Perth Kinnoull Rotary Club. Taking as his theme his design hero, Frank Lloyd Wright, Bob pointed out that Wright was a contemporary in both time (early 20th century) and place (Chicago) of the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris. Bob believes Wright’s design philosophies were based on Froebel theory (form of life, beauty and knowledge) and the ancient symbolism of the Tree of Life. Characterised by overhanging, often cantilevered, eaves and a strong horizontal emphasis, Wright was a more successful contemporary of Scotland’s Charles Rennie Mackintosh, both being proponents of the Art Deco movement. Bob’s interest in Frank Lloyd Wright seems to have been enhanced when he visited Chicago in 2005 (along with 53,000 other Rotarians) to celebrate the centenary of Rotary. In the Oak Park district of Chicago there are many examples of Wright’s work, such as the Robie House, Bob skipping some Rotary plenary sessions to visit these! Other notable examples are in Los Angeles (the Hollyhock House), Pennsylvania (Fallingwater), and perhaps the most famous and accessible, the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Like Mackintosh, Wright also often designed the internal furniture and fittings to match his buildings, maximising light and space, and making clever use of glass. Like all good architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright’s work is timeless and appealing, and still provides an inspiration for today.
