Oakwell Hall Country Park
Bronty connection

Oakwell Hall served as the primary inspiration for Fieldhead,
the ancestral home of the independent heiress Shirley Keeldar in Charlotte Brontë's 1849 novel Shirley

Key Connections to Oakwell Hall.

  • The Visit: In the 19th century, the hall operated as a girls' boarding school. Charlotte's close friend Ellen Nussey lived nearby in Birstall and likely introduced her to the place. [1, 2]
  • The Novel (Shirley): Charlotte described the house in great detail in her book. Readers can still spot features she wrote about, such as the old latticed windows, the stone porch, and the grand cedar tree on the lawn. Fieldhead serves as the home for the strong-willed character Shirley Keeldar. [1, 2, 3]
  • The Brontë Way: Today, Oakwell Hall marks the official starting point of the Brontë Way, a long-distance walking trail that connects key locations linked to the Brontë
