Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Club Speaker Rotarian Makham
Makham has been a Rotarian for 30 years.
Makham told of the 28 states in India and Makham helps fund raise for the Punjab Rotary Club for a school.
The Charity operates 2 months in an eye camp. There are 5 eye camps an the charity pays for food and medication ,800 people turn up for treatment.
RC of Batley which Makhan was then a member raised £400 for school uniforms
Rotary Club of Phagwara in South east India were helped with a water cooler.

Club Speaker Rotarian Mary Wallace.

Mary gave her talk about her 50 years in education.
Mary said her story started in 1964 with a teacher shortage in her local authority.

Mary had 2 years in teacher training college where nuns were lecturing.

Mary applied for a job in local authority in Hull and finished in a school in Hessle Road around the fishing industry.
Mary became deputy head at a small school and a large school until in 1987 Hull reorganised their schools.
Mary got a headship in the most difficult estate in Hull.
Mary talked of then having to do her own budgets with decisions with teaching assistants and teaching staff.
She talked of Ofstead starting and each teacher inspected 6 times.
Mary worked in special measures for 10 years creating an action plan for it.
In 2009 she retired for 3 weeks but was brought back
and became Director of Education in Hull .

Steve thanked Mary for her talk.

Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Speaker Christine Beal - Mitochondrial.

On Mon 26th Sept Christine came to Batley Community Centre to give a talk to the club about her charity
" My Mito Mission " which is a genetic disorder affecting the mitochondrial .

With Christine was Helens son Eddie who has this condition and is a focus of the charity in that Eddie is a
Micro Mission with his own story. See Eddies story below.

Christine talked about her own story when one of her daughters, Emma, was taken ill in 2010 aged 21 and was in Calderdale hospitalised with heart and brain damage for a month where they diagnosed it might be mitochondrial disease but it took 5 years to confirm this and they sadly lost  Emma in 2017 aged 28.

There is a charity, the Lily Foundation, for children and families with the disease but nothing for adults so Christine set up her Charity for everyone, children and adults, to make people more aware of the illness and hopes to inspire increased awareness in the condition. .

Christine explained that basically the disease means the energy production system is not working properly.
The Mitochondria are in every cell in your body; they are like the battery packs. They convert your food into energy
and so your body breaks down because of this genetic illness and can damage major organs.

Christine says it is estimated it affects 1 in 5000 .

The majority of their funds are chanelled to the Lily Foundation and are raised go to research projects as well as to projects supporting those with
Mito around the UK.

Millions of people in the UK have conditions which are known to involve mitochondrial damage.
eg MS, Sepsis, Stroke, Cancer, Heart disease and many more.
 
A key part of what the charity do is empowering affected individuals and families around the UK to tell their own stories and run their own personal missions - like Eddie's. See Eddie's story below.
Part of Eddie's mission involved his daughter Isobella aged 7 who has done a
Leeds fun run for Mitocho and raised £340.

During Helen's year in office as president the club raised £3250 for the Lily Foundation.

Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Club Speaker Joe Appleyard Tong Garden Centre.

On Mon 3 April Joe visited the Club at Batley Community Centre and gave a hands on talk and practical demonstration on planting a basket and planter with Pansy flowers.

Luddites and partners, friends and "Friends" of the club
attended the talk.

Joe is head plantsman at Tong garden centre.
John talked about working at Morrisons for 29 years as head of Agriculture. He worked primarily in cut flowers and travelled the world Spain, Portugal, Egypt and many more countries.
Joe started his demonstration using a 12inch basket filling sides every other hole with pansies then filled around sides with moss. Then good quality multipurpose compost and filling the top with pansy plants. All the while Joe gave a series of stories about his travels and his work with plants.
Next Joe showed how to plant a planter display. Filling with compost and a centre perennial, and Pansies all around the top.
Joe took questions and gave tips on how to get the best displays. To get fab displays Joe said use weak Miracle-Gro leave for a couple of days then treat with tomato feed.
After more stories President Steve asked John Logan to give a vote of thanks to Joe.
Joe invited people to come and see him at Tong for advice and help in planting.

Two lucky people drew winning raffle tickets to win the two planters Joe had planted.
