As a Chartered Electrical Engineer, Tony retired from university lecturing in Power Systems and has immensely enjoyed retirement. He joined Glossop Rotary Club in 1984 and was President in 1996.
In 1975 he was invited to apply for a Paul Harris Rotary Foundation Post-Graduate Scholarship and was successful, allowing him to Study for a Masters in Power Engineering at Edmonton, Canada.
Tony’s talk covers the historical development and events leading up to the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. It outlines the huge engineering and financial aspects of the project as well as a NASA video of Hubble’s launch inside the Space Shuttle Discovery.
There are many full colour images of many of the planetary and deep space objects viewed & recorded by Hubble & NASA. These are best viewed on as large a screen as possible.
The talk ends with a few thoughts on the future and summarises the immense benefits Hubble has given the world of astronomy.
