How can children “LOSE WORDS”?
By not using them when:
- what they describe is no longer easily seen, like some birds, animals and plants;
- a famous dictionary for children is updated and the publisher needs space for new words, like “Internet”, “Laptop” ........
What can be done to remember them? Paint beautiful pictures and write lovely poems and songs about them!
The Rotary Club of Market Harborough , together with the Rotaract Club, have given ten local primary schools a copy each of the much-acclaimed book, “The Lost Words”, by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris, with the wish that the children will be able to see and know about these treasures. The authors have created fresh painted pictures and short poems about a some of words from nature that have been left out of the latest Oxford University Press Junior Dictionary. These include words such as acorn, otter, kingfisher.
The idea to donate the book was led by Rotarian Joyce de Borde Barker, who had read that Rotary Clubs in Scotland bought the book for every primary school in Scotland. Why not do the same in Market Harborough area? The ten schools who received the book are Farndon Fields, Foxton, Great Bowden, Husbands Bosworth, Little Bowden, Lubenham, Market Harborough C of E, Market Harborough St Joseph’s RC, Meadowdale, and Ridgeway.

In the first picture Rotary Club President carole Baldam and Rotaractor Bex Crook present the Lost Words book to students at St Joseph's school. In the second, Rotarian Les Dodd, lead for the Youth Sevices team, presenting a copy to students at Foxton Primary School. In the third, President Carole and Les present a book to students at Farndon Fields school. In the fourth, Les and Rotarian Geoff Schofield present a book to Meadowdale students, and in the final photo Les is presenting a book to Ridgeway school.
