In the year 1996 a young boy called Kbanda was cycling home late at night near his home in Lugazi in rural Uganda when he was struck and seriously injured by a lorry travelling in the opposite direction. In a culture where life is cheap, medical help is nonexistent and survival is a constant daily toil, the young Kbanda was deemed beyond help and being stripped of his possessions and money , by locals, was then dumped in the ditch at the side of the road to die.
Some little time later, Hugh Henderson, a native of Dundee, was travelling along the road in his Landrover when he came across the boy lying in the ditch. Having checked that he was still barely alive , he and his travelling companion carefully lifted the stricken boy into their vehicle and took him some 35 miles to a hospital in the capital, Kampala.
At the hospital, medical staff were not keen on treating the patient as he had no resources to pay for treatment and hospital accommodation, so Hugh agreed to meet all expenses relating to the boy
