After an enforced absence since 2019 the Mayor of Truro’s Charity Golf Day took place on Friday 13 May at Truro Golf Club. It was the 25th anniversary of this event which has always been organised by the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen.
The Invictus Trust Cornwall (chosen by the Mayor) and the Youth Sport Trust were the headline charities. The Invictus Trust raises awareness of adolescent mental health and the Youth Sport Trust is the UK’s leading charity improving every young person’s education through sport and play.
The President of the Rotary Club, Michael Grundy, said he was delighted with a record number of 44 entries of teams of 4. As well as playing for the Rotary Club of Boscawen Trophy there were other valuable competition prizes including engraved salvers, golf gear from the professional’s shop and surprises in the Grand Draw and Raffle. The Event Organiser, David Pollard, said he was very grateful to all the sponsors and helpers. Truro Audi was the main sponsor and was able to show off its cars at the Golf Club. Chris Nicholls Motors also made a generous contribution.
Despite a busy schedule, the Mayor, Steven Webb, came to the Golf Club and spoke to competitors and Rotary Club volunteers. His daughter, Kember, the Lady Mayoress, presented the prizes at a packed session in the evening.

Second Prize: Phil Green, David Horne, Len Kriehn, Richard Daniel
Third Prize: Bill Evison, Raj Dhumale, Paul Griffiths, Neil Sawkins
Visitors Prize: Nalders Solicitors
Seniors: Stuart Roden, David Bailey, Sid Platt, Glenn Robinson
Phil Hodges got a ‘hole in one’ at the 2nd hole and Alex Penrose won the putting competition.
Although the financial accounts have still to be ratified the Rotary Club feels confident that it can present a cheque for £1500 to the Mayor’s Charity and offer £1320 to the Youth Sport Trust to pay for two well known athletes to act as mentors in Truro Schools. The preliminary account indicates an event profit of some £5500
Congratulations to the Planning Group, led by David P. and to the other club members, wives and friends who helped on the day: Peter H, Julian H, Max B, Richard L, Paul A, Phil F, Chris G, Ed H, David H, Gyl G, Pam R, Jenny S, Angela B, Anne P, Juliet L, and Judy M. Note: Frank and Louise, and Ian and Tess B, were prevented by covid contact from being there.

We celebrated the Saints Way Challenge and its fundraising aim with a short and easy walk at Fowey.

Boscawen supported the City Council by sponsoring junior football coaching across the city, providing Rotary-branded drinking bottles. David R. and David P. lead, and here we see Bernard, David C. David P, Ed, Brian and PB at the training sessions.

We will be at Sainsbury's, this month from 16th to 19th, with our newly acquired Barrel Organ. Monies raised will go to St. Petroc's.

This year, under lockdown constraints and with Julian's expert management we have run an online Youth Speaks competition. The only Club in the District to achieve this.

During Lockdown we have been prevented from holding our usual fundraising events. However we know that local charities need support at these times more than ever.

This Challenge is open to all Cornish Rotary Clubs and their friends. We are walking the Cornish coastal footpath all through August to raise funds for Cornwall Mind and for Clubs' chosen charities.

Many Clubs throughout the County have joined the Challenge, and we are now within 36 miles of walking every bit of the Cornish Coastal Footpath. See the Map for the remaining 7 stretches to be walked.

Our Challenge is completed! (Just one short section in the east remains). When our Senior Vice President voiced scepticism that we could do it he was by no means the only one. Perhaps we should all have a piece of that hat!

We recorded the miles we walked/biked each week and have shown them as virtual walks. So far, we have walked from John O'Groats to Lands End, and from Lands End to London. We are also raising charity funds at the same time.

We recently entertained our friends from St Petroc's at the club and heard from them about the encouraging reduction in homelessness in the county over the last 3 years.
moreEvery year just after Christmas we go for a bracing walk with friends, children, grandchildren, dogs, whatever..This time we started at Mylor, went round via the Pandora Inn and back all via creekside paths and woodland.
