Young Writer 2025/6 Competition Final Review (11-5-26)
The presentations of certificates and book tokens to the 8 schools that entered is now complete. The last one took place at Richard Lander on 22 May, with Sue Lawrence, and previously there have been Truro High with Judy Mansell, Perran ar Worthal with Mike G, Archbishop Ben with Mike Barber, Mike G, and Peter Davies, Truro College with Demelza Todd, and TMS. Certificates and tokens have had to be sent to Truro Prep and Roseland Academy.
Other judges were Lois Bush, Debbie Tweedie, Tom Bayly Ian Halford, Sue Hughes, Deborah Richards and Chris Granger,
100 entries were received, and all receive a certificate, and the top marked entries also get book tokens, down to 5th place and with some Highly Commended. A total of £410 has been spent on book tokens, The Junior Winner was Nia Burnard of Truro High, Rupert Sharp of Richard Lander won the Intermediate section and Abigail Penna of Truro College the Senior. All received £30 tokens
The national theme this year was “Happiness in Nature” and the judges looked for imagination and creativity in the writing and its relevance to the theme, as well as the ability to engage interest, consistency in argument, and the neatness of presentation.
The whole competition process started back before Christmas, and had a closing date of 30 Jan. 2 rounds of judging were then completed by 31 March, and the 3 category winners were then sent to District. At this level Rupert Sharp and Abigail Penna came second in their categories.
The pieces are mostly full of imagination and enthusiasm and reading them is always extremely enjoyable. This year the general standard -based on comments from the judges - was that there were fewer outstanding pieces than before with the beach and surfing coming up frequently. Sometimes random fantasy/computer games themes were used without much relevance to the theme. The standard of presentation in the junior category was high with many pieces very neatly typed, and although some of these were clearly assisted by parents this was taken as ingenuity. The use of AI - which we had worried about at the start - turned out not to be an issue.
A finishing testimonial: Falmouth have struggled in recent years to get many entries, and they apparently asked the District Organiser for any tips. He, in turn, recommended they get in touch with us to see if we would share our “method”. Which, of course, we have been pleased to do!
