ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SCOTTISH SCHOOLS’ INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS: EMIRATES ARENA 3rd and 4th FEBRUARY
All the energy and effort put into training by hundreds of young people from all over Scotland came to the test in the Emirates Arena, Glasgow on Wednesday and Thursday 3rd and 4th February. This vast arena echoed to the cheers of supporters, the pounding of feet on the track, and cries of jubilation as hard work paid off in success. Together with hundreds of helpers and supporters from Rotary clubs, the Scottish Schools’ Athletic Association (SSAA), provided the operational skills demanded to mount such a massive event.
In two age categories – under and over 16– over a thousand boys and girls pitted their strength, stamina and skill against the best from some two hundred schools in Scotland. Events included a wide range of track and field competitions, allowing for different skills and abilities to be tested to the full.
Local entrants from Dunblane High School, Wallace High School and Beaconsfield School were involved in fifteen events. None made the podium, but all were thrilled by the scope of the event and by the opportunity of competing in a major national event. They also enjoyed meeting like-minded young people from all over the country, and having the chance to pit their skills against them. This was a truly memorable event for all of them.
