On 9 May twelve members of our club set off for London on the 8.12
from Bournemouth although Chris Potter met us there as he travelled by
National Express
After a coffee near
the new pedestrian bridge at the Embankment in the sunshine we made our
way to the Visitors entrance to Westminster Hall and checked in at the
Tour desk at11.30 after passing through airport style security screening
and our tour began on time at noon
Our guide was excellent and we got into the Commons Chamber and the House of Lords chamber as well as the Queens Robing room
At
2pm our Club Honorary member Tobias Ellwood MP and Conor Burns MP who
were our co hosts showed us to our table in the Members Dining room.
We all enjoyed a fine lunch and House of Commons wine and coffee and the conversation flowed until 3.30 pm
After
lunch Tobias and Conor gave us Serjeant at Arms passes for the Public
gallery where we saw two lively debates in the next hour and a half with
Ministers at the despatch box although John Burcow the Speaker stole
the show with his authorative good humour. Keith took some photos of
our happy group under Big Ben as we left
We made our way home on three different trains, the 4.35 the 5.05 and the 5.35
Those of us who had a unique experience and a memorable day were
Chris
Potter David Trenchard Keith Loveless Alan Turle Graham Rogers John
Maddox Mike and Jenny Crockett Richard Wood Lionel Harley Henry Mceown
and David Sidwick were the participants
