ROTARY AND RESCUE – Two important local organisations

The work of the Edale Mountain Rescue Team which cover the Matlock District in Emergencies, has been recognised and supported by a £250 Donation from the Rotary Club of Matlock. 

Rotary President Tom Moloney visited the purpose-built EMRT HQ in Edale and presented the Cheque, with the correct ‘social distancing’ to Bob Davey, the EMRT Treasurer. The monies will go toward the running costs on the Team.                     

Mountain Rescue in this country is a totally voluntary organisation with no direct government funding and exists entirely because of public support. Edale Team are a particularly busy team, and in 2019 they attended 129 call-out’s to a wide variety of incidents. So far in 2020 they have responded to 132 incidents.

This increase in ‘rescue’ numbers, with still over two months to go this year, is probably due to there being more walkers and hikers going out for exercise during the Coronavirus Pandemic. Unless properly equipped for the terrain or weather, it is easy for the ill-prepared to get into difficulties, requiring Mountain Rescue Teams assistance. Sometimes slips trips and falls require attention as the injured person is unable to return to their vehicle or home, without assistance. In some cases, the Air Ambulance is needed.

Matlock Rotary Club are pleased to help the EMRT, who are 1 of the 8 Mountain Rescue Teams in the Peak District, who along with Search and Rescue Dogs Association team and the Derbyshire Cave Rescue crew, and Air Ambulance, rely upon donations freely given.                                                                                                                                                         

Matlock Rotary Club were able to give their donation because of the generosity of the people of Matlock and District, supporting local Rotary fund-raising events.
