A well-attended Rotary meeting last Thursday listened to Faye Shepherd talk about Outreach Paramedics, an organisation she set up at the outbreak of the Ukraine war to provide paramedic services. A trained paramedic herself, she saw a need for ambulances, medical supplies and training in the war zone and set out to provide them. Over time, this has become focussed mainly on paramedic training for firefighters, since they are the ones who find casualties in burning buildings, and often become targets of shelling and drones themselves.
A mission costs about £8,000, entirely funded by donations, much of which goes on fuel for the two ambulances they drive out and back each time. Funds are also used to procure supplies such as tourniquets from local Ukrainian manufacturers. So far they have trained over 500 people, often in bunkers under Russian bombardment, and plan another mission in October to Dnipro.
The day before the meeting, President Ceri reached her 80th birthday. (Octogenarian presidents? We got this.) She gave out celebratory chocolates to everyone in the meeting, but was then surprised by a cake with candles and a rendition of Happy Birthday.
