Wine Tasting for Polio Eradication - Wadebridge Rotary raises £1,500+
What better way to spend a Saturday night (25th Feb) than at a wine tasting, with good food, good company and a live singer, in aid of Polio Eradication? The event, organised by Wayne Mitchell, proved popular from its announcement, as Rotarians and friends signed up. Wayne’s ambitions of 100 people were hastily scaled back following a rebellion by the volunteer chefs, Nick Pickles and Paul Boote, who said they could cope with 50, max. This number was reached so easily that Wayne had to retrieve all the advertising leaflets to stop people asking to come.
Local wine importer Edward Fishlock brought along a Chateau Gramboy 2020 (white Bergerac) to go with the smoked mackerel pate starter; Cotes de Rhone Sablet 2020 (red) for the coq-au-vin main course; and Sainte Croix du Monte 2018, a white dessert wine to go with the Sicilian lemon tart or chocolate and orange tart. All were excellent, as was the food. With revenue coming from tickets, bars sales, a raffle, an auction and a guess-how-many-golf-balls-in the-bucket competition, the amount raised after costs was over £1,500. As Wayne always reminds us, this will be worth £4,500 after the 2-for-1 matching by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
At the following Thursday’s Rotary meeting, Wayne thanked Nick and Paul, plus everyone else who had helped make the event such a success – Sue, Mike, Paul & Patricia, John & Sandra, and the several friends and family members who waited on the tables. And President Nick did not miss the opportunity to thank Wayne in turn for organizing the whole thing.
