If you’ve been into Wadebridge since Sunday morning (7th February) you might have spotted the Co-op flower bed covered in purple crocuses. Rotarians Trevor Wiltshire and Wayne Mitchell tidied up the bed, allowing the flowers, planted last year, to show through. Our newest member, John Young, took the rubbish away. Thanks also to Victoria from Bridge Bistro for the hot coffee.
The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary International’s EndPolioNow campaign, which has funded a global polio vaccination programme along with the World Health Organisation and more recently the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Since the campaign started in 1985, wild polio has been eliminated in every country in the world except for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Whilst the world’s attention is on Covid-19, and that pandemic has interrupted the polio vaccination programme, it is important that we do not lose sight of polio. In 2017, reported cases in those two countries were 22, but that number is now increasing. As we have seen with Covid-19, a disease can easily spring back and spread. Rotary will continue its campaign and Wadebridge Rotary will continue to raise funds for it.
