Bob Bateman joined Torrington Rotary Club in 1984 and served as President from 1990-1991. He was a popular and energetic Rotarian, full of enthusiasm and good cheer and always ready to help his many friends.
As a former teacher at Great Torrington Academy, Bob was especially supportive of local young people and the various Rotary youth competitions which our Torrington club organised. He was often a judge for Young Chef and a superb ' employer ' during the Mock Job Interviews. In his latter years, Bob would read all the student stories and poems written for the local 'Crier' magazine and adjudicate a monthly and annual winner for our local 'Rotary Young Writer' competition.
Bob was rightly proud of his sons Geoff and Ian and their families, including his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But when not with them, he was happiest when sharing a bottle with his Rotarian friends or former colleagues.
He will be sorely missed by all of us, and by his devoted family, to whom we extend our sincere condolences.
