In 1984 the Rotary International Convention was held in Birmingham at the National Exhibition Centre and over Twenty Seven Thousand delegates attended.
In the run up to this event we in the Torrington Club realized that this would provide an ideal opportunity to raise funds for the Addeyfield Home that we were setting up at Glen Tor in Villa Road.
We commissioned Dartington Glass to produce a limited edition commemorative Tankard and Paperweight engraved with the Convention logo to celebrate the occasion , the tankards to sell for £14.95 and the Paperweight in a fitted case to sell for £9.95.
We thought there would only be a few stalls selling commemorative ware so there should be no problem in selling our top of the range glass but when we arrived we found that our stall was in a vast exhibition hall staging the “East Midlands Expo”.
In spite of this ,the Tankards sold out immediately but we struggled with the paperweights because they were very heavy but overall it was a great success, we all enjoyed our attendance at the Convention and we raised over £2500 towards equipping the Abbeyfield Home .

PS
Both Paul and Jenny and Simon and Jan had to leave early and Phyllis and I were left to clear up ;we were driving an MG Metro at the time and by the time we had loaded all the unsold Paperweights together with all the display materials and our suitcases the car was down on it’s gunwales and we had to waddle our way home at 50mph.
