Sixteenth century merchants house, inn, cow byre, Drill Hall and for almost forty years a community arts centre. The Plough is a, largely, self-financing resource that towns much bigger than Torrington would be only too pleased to have.
The Plough, admirably steered through the last 10 years by the indomitable Richard Wolffendon-Brown, justly boasts the website tag line "The small venue with the big reputation". Next year (2015) marks the 40th anniversary of the The Plough as an arts centre. This year marks 100 years since the flower of Great Torrington's youth were photographed marching off to war from the Drill Hall. It is certain The Plough is in for a busy two years commemorating the Great War and celebrating 40 years.
One of their most ambitious projects has been to embrace the age of digital cinema and install a digital, satellite projector. This brings the highest quality movie presentation to the heart of Devon. It will also enhance the programme by allowing The Plough to present big-screen live events from national theatre companies such as The National Theatre and the RSC.
This project has necessitated raising £100,000, a feat accomplished in record time by support for The Plough that is second to none. The Rotary Club of Torrington is proud to have been a small part of this effort by presenting Richard with a cheque for £500.
