The first Bodmin Airfield & Rotary (BAR8) – Ultra Run took place on Sat. 14thMarch 2015, around a route of moorland, lanes, tracks and forest trails, with checkpoints along the way providing energy food and water.
The figure of eight 33mile course, set to attract long distance runners and walkers, was centred on Bodmin Airfield with all the required facilities. The good weather tempted many to take up the challenge, resulting in a fantastic day of sweat and enjoyment.
A total of 65 runners and walkers took part, 56 completed the course and received a unique slate medal. The quickest runners (although it was not a race) were Duncan Oakes, Richard Keefe and Richard Martin all in a time of 5hrs 15 mins. The final pair completed it, just as darkness fell, in 12hrs 15mins. (See Results List )
Bodmin Rotary Club organised the event with the kind hospitality and support of Bodmin Airfield and many sponsors to raise money for local community needs.
ABOUT 2016 - The success of the run
inspired Bodmin Rotary to consider a second event for 2016 so planning started
without delay, with the aim of incorporating suggested improvements and
expanding the event into a choice of routes; approx.-33mile-Ultra and approx.-10mile-Mini Also again to investigat the possibility of the figure of 8 course incorporating check points on Rough Tor and Brown Willie. - Sat 12th March 2016
The aim of the event is to provide a challenge for those who are passionate and enthusiastic about running and walking. At the same time provide an opportunity for competitors and supporters to meet and enjoy the day, with all profits being used to help in the local community of Bodmin.
The airfield has ample parking for participants and supporters and facilities on site include hot showers and toilets, this will be useful for those who decide to make use of the bar after they have finished and want to relax.
Bodmin Rotary very much value
and welcome support from last year’s participants and also look forward to
seeing new entries. We have a long term aim of improving and expanding BAR8,
ultimately hoping to find a route across the main part of the moor. We also
extend special thanks to Phil for his vision and efforts in setting up the
first BAR8, which has given us the format to follow for 2016.
We all wish Phil a speedy recovery.
The website giving all details, entry form, payment etc. will be available by the end of Nov. 2015....
