PRESIDENT 2019/20/21  -  Peter Ford....

Peter has lived in Bodmin since 1987 and has two  adult children.
He worked for SWEB / WPD until 2003, from when he formed his own electrical services company trading under “Essential Maintenance’.
He has always helped the Bodmin community in many ways, including Christmas Lights, Bodmin Town Fireworks and Heritage day, even during the years before joining Bodmin Rotary Club in 2016.

COUPLE RECEIVE CITIZENS AWARD

Press report....

Each year Bodmin Rotary Club endeavours to present a Citizens Award to a person who has been outstanding in the Community and one who has made a major contribution through their life for the benefit of others and without seeking any remuneration.

Peter & Sylvia Cooper received this years Bodmin Rotary Club Citizens Award at a presentation at the Westberry Hotel, Bodmin.
Sylvia 84 has recently retired from serving as a trustee and churchwarden of St. Lawrence Community Church for the past 23 years her husband, Peter, 80 has also retired as chair of the church council.
The couple both worked for many years at St Lawrence Hospital prior to it closing in 1996. At the time of the closure, the church and grounds (which were owned by the NHS) were to be disposed of to the highest bidder.
Mr and Mrs Cooper along with a band of volunteers, the hospital chaplain and a number of Bodmin Town Council members, managed to buy the church for £1.00.   They formed a board of trustees and leased the church from the council for a peppercorn rent.  In the subsequent years with the help of many friends, the couple set about raising £160,000 to renovate the church, keeping the building open as a thriving community hub.
Sylvia said: "It was never the intention to seek any recognition for our efforts, we just wanted to see the church preserved as a memorial to our friends and colleagues, recognising the hard work and dedication shown by all the staff of St Lawrence Hospital involved in caring for the patients."

BODMIN ROTARIANS HELP DISABLED LADY

A plea was received from the full time carers of 'Carol', who was disabled from a very young age, she lives in a very small flat and paints by holding a brush in her mouth. Help was required in providing storage shelves for Art equipment etc.  as everything at the moment is kept in containers and boxes on the floor, which severely restricts wheelchair movement around the flat.

Rotarian Peter Old quickly came up with the offer of some adjustable wall shelving and Rotarian Neil Carter offered to apply his skills in fixing them to the wall.  

Peter and Neil went to the property and completed the job without delay;  as can be seen in the photo below, expertly fitted, making good use of the wall space available and leaving much needed floor space free.

Breakfast was in Wales (Cardiff Club),  Lunch was in England (Clifton Bristol Club) and Drinks only evening meeting was in Ireland (Dublin Central Club)  The challenge, the journey and the three clubs visited was an exciting and enjoyable experience, all the clubs were very different.  Some photos see 'Photo Gallery' above tab / link....

Bodmin Rotarians - Ambassadors Extraordinaire.
A group of four members from Bodmin Rotary Club - Peter Old, Peter Bray, Allan Foad and Peter Ford recently visited three Rotary Clubs in one day, all in different countries. Breakfast was in Wales (Cardiff Club),  Lunch was in England (Clifton Bristol Club) and Drinks were in Ireland (Dublin Central Club)  The challenge, the journey and the three clubs was an exciting experience and  all three clubs were very different.
The Cardiff Club met for breakfast at 7.30 at the Cardiff Golf Club – the group were welcomed by the No1 President ( Three Presidents for the year each doing 4 months) and joined 24 members for breakfast and their meeting consisting of  50% women. The speaker was promoting the Cardiff City Hospice.
The Clifton Club, Bristol met at the Clifton Tennis Club for Lunch, 34 members were attending, but they have no lady members. Following lunch the speaker, head of a local Junior School gave a talk about his schools involvement in supporting an African School.
A member of Clifton Club then provided a taxi for the group to the airport.  The aim, on arriving at Dublin airport at 5.30pm, was then by taxi, to get to the Dublin Central Club by 6.30pm for the start of their meeting. The flight being approx.. 30mins late meant that we arrived at the club at 6.45pm.  We were welcomed and offered a seat and a glass of Water or Wine.
Dublin Central Club was, to say the least, different !   They meet in an elegant room in the prestigious Hibernian Private Club in St. Stephens Square, Central Dublin.  The club with approx.. 24 members, but only 11 were at the meeting were sitting around a central table with only a drink of wine or water, no meal is partaken – the hour long meeting is only to discuss Rotary business.  Much of this meeting was taken in introductions by them and us.   I was found that most of their members originate from many different parts of the world, Argentina, Hungary, Croatia, Canada, Spain, Turkey….    Their President was away so the Secretary took the meeting of approx.. 50% Ladies.  One member Monica Robertson was the DG of Ireland (North & South) comprising approx.. 100 clubs.
Some ways that we each raise funds was discussed, it was evident that Dublin were far more cash rich than Bodmin. (A Valentines Charity Ball with 350 attending raised over £20,000 for charity)  The meeting was conducted very informally and only lasted the hour.
Having fulfilled their challenge of 3 countries in one day the group used the following day to explore Dublin and partake in some fine Jameson Whiskey and Guinness.

JACCAs CRICKET TOUR

Bodmin President Peter Old presents a cheque for £300.00 to Jacca Cavendish, aged 12, to support him on his Cornwall Schools Cricket Association U13’s Tour of South Africa , where they will play 9 matches over 16 days.  Jacca is currently Bodmin College and Lanhydrock Cricket Club – Wicketkeeper & Batsman.  Good luck Jacca.

Bodmin Rotarian Peter Williams was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) by President of Bodmin Rotary Rtn. Colin Marshall,  Wed. 6th June 2018.

Peter has achieved this honour through being a sustaining member of the Foundation Trust Fund.  Although his dedication and hard work as a District 1175 ADG is well recognised - this award was achieved through donating in excess of $1000.00 via regular donations.  No other member of Bodmin Rotary Club has ever achieved this - well done Pete a proud moment - now onwards to be the first Bodmin Rotarian to achieve a MPHF !

CALLIWITH COLLEGE VISIT :  A very enjoyable visit, a good tour around the College and an opportunity to meet some senior staff and get to know Mr Wardle, Principle, better.  The members that went were very impressed with the equipment and facilities and are keen to develop shared events with staff and students.

Bodmin Rotary members visit Cornwall IncineratorBodmin Rotary President and club members recently visited the newly opened Incinerator for Cornwall at St. Dennis, nr. St. Austell.

BODMIN ROTARY HELP FELICITYThe Rotary Club of Bodmin recently assisted in the purchase of a motorised wheelchar for Falicity Marriot, of Bodmin  -  Donations of £1000 each were made by Bodmin Rotary Club and Bodmin Lions Club.

Below is a recent photo of Falicity receiving second prize in a dressage competition in Gloucestershire,  using her new wheelchair at a Riding for the Disabled Event.

Bodmin Rotary - RYLA candidate 2017

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA)  is a weeks residential course, based at the Dartmoor Adventure Centre at Okehampton, Devon and covers teamwork, leadership, communication and problem solving. It is organised for Rotary by The Youth Hostels Association and is run by fully trained, accredited, and DBS checked, instructors.  The courses are designed for 16 - 18 years (Junior) and 18 - 28 (Seniors)

Participants have great fun coupled with a real sense of achievement and increased awareness of their personal strengths. The week is all about teamwork and problem solving led by professional people who are experienced in motivating young people. There will be opportunities for participants to demonstrate some leadership skills, but in the main, each activity will be closely guided by a trained instructor.

£6,000 + Raised for MNDA  at Bodmin Rotary Golf Event.

The Rotary Club of Bodmin held its annual charity golf day at Lanhydrock Hotel and Golf Course on 5^th May which raised in excess of £6,000 for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

The golf day, which is a regular annual event is hailed as the biggest charity golf day in Cornwall, with forty six teams of 4 (184) golfers braving the windy weather to compete a ‘texas scramble’ format for various prizes including a car for a hole in one.  Local businesses donated generously and volunteers of the local branch of the MND Association prepared a raffle, the tickets of which sold out within just a few hours. 

Bodmin Rotary Club organised the event in conjunction with Derek Williamson of the Cornwall MNDA. Derek who, lost his wife, son to the disease and  prior to that his sister in law, pledged to raise money for MND and promote awareness of the illness.   He has helped to organise numerous golf events in Cornwall and Spain and to date the events have raised well over £100,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Bodmin Rotary Club have organised a golf day for the past 16years for different charities to benefit, but for the past 9 years have supported Derek and MND.

Bodmin Rotary President Peter Williams, in his speech before the prize giving, thanked Graham and Clare Bond, the owners of Lanhydrock Golf Club for the use of the facilities and their personal support.

Past MP, Scott Mann  presented the winners with their prizes - the overall winners were the  Dave Nottle Scaffolding (with an overall score of 54.4)      Derek Williamson thanked everyone who attended the golf day, giving special thanks to the Rotary Club of Bodmin for their overwhelming support in organising the golf day once again.

BODMIN ROTARY CLUB WELCOME A SPECIAL GUEST

Brian Cumming MBE. GCStG, an 85year old Chelsea Pensioner, from The Royal Hospital, Chelsea (RCH), was recently entertained by Bodmin Rotary members, at a special meal in the Westberry Hotel, Bodmin.  Members were honored that Brian accepted their invitation and travelled such a long way and after the meal gave a very  interesting and amusing talk on life at the RCH.

The following day, Bodmin Rotary President Peter Williams, hosted Brian at The DCLI Museum, which included Cornish Pasty & Saffron Cake for lunch, although Brian chose the take the Saffron Cake back to Chelsea for his friends.

Brian Cummings MBE is a sprightly 85-year-old, a keen photographer and a tour guide for the Royal Hospital who attributes his youthfulness to 58 years of a wonderful life and a wonderful wife, whom he met at 15 and married at 18. Then  four days after their honeymoon, left for Egypt and didn’t return for almost four years.

The line of medals on his chest reflects his 33 years in the Royal Corps of Signals serving, inter alia, in Egypt during King Farouk’s deposition, Jordan after King Abdullah’s assassination and Cyprus during the EOKA troubles, as well as in Singapore and Germany. He was made an MBE for his welfare work at the Ministry of Defence, where he spent 14 years after retiring from the army.

Upon qualifying for the RCH (applicants must be over 65, have no financial dependants, be of good character and have served as a regular soldier for 12 years) Brian was invited for the customary four-day trial period. He said: “The moment I arrived, I knew this place was for me”  He sold the family home in Plymouth, packed his remaining belongings into two suitcases and two cardboard boxes, and embarked on his “new life” at Chelsea. -  What a wonderful man.

Bodmin Rotary Oct. Beer Festival was a great success attracting a huge number of friends and customers.  special thanks go to the Landlord & Landlady of the Masons Arms Bodmin, Stewart & Mandy,  who kindly allowed us to install 10 barrels of Real Ale and sell it in their bar !  -  Many Thanks also to many other helpers and our ale sponsers.

Bodmin Carnival was a great success - Congratulations to the Carnival committee, their hard work and determination paid off - despite the weather and many obstacales thousands of local people turned out to support it.  Bodmin Rotary Club were delighted to receive the First Place Cup for the 'Topical' section and also the overall Carnival Cup.

CONGRATULATIONS TO -  BODMIN CARNIVAL COMMITTEE

Following the very poor report produced by the Cornish Guardian this week Bodmin Rotary Club would like to say what a great job of organisation the Carnival Committee did. Despite all the problems, including the weather and insurance for floats etc. the procession went ahead and was supported by thousands of local people who obviously wanted to see a Bodmin Carnival again.  Well done to all the committee – we look forward to next year.

On the 6th July 2016 the chain of office was passed to Rtn. Peter Williams - From the village of Polruan to the County Town of Bodmin, Peter has served his community. Firstly, as a firefighter with Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service for 36 years, and currently as a member of the Rotary Club of Bodmin. Peter has accepted the chain of office as Bodmin Rotary Club President for the next twelve months, July 2016-17.  Peters aim is to continue a high level of involvement in the community and youth projects, also   giving international help whenever required.

The Westberry Hotel - Bodmin - Meeting Venue.

Le Khanh & Simon welcome you....

The Westberry Hotel, at which the Rotary Club of Bodmin has met
regularly since 1989, changed hands on 5th April 2106 when Bob and
Carole Marshall finally decided that it was time to take a very
well-earned rest and retire. The business was then sold to two cousins, Le Khanh
Au Duong and Simon Nguyen, who are now jointly running the hotel with
the help of almost all of the team who were formerly working with Bob
and Carole, together with a few new faces.

Both Le Khanh and Simon originally come from Vietnam, but have been
living in the UK for over 20 years -- Le Khanh, whose background is in
statistics and operational research, gained an MBA at Cass Business
School a few years ago and then went off to spend four years in Abu
Dhabi working with Etihad Airlines. Simon and his family, meanwhile,
have been busy running a very successful Vietnamese restaurant in the
centre of Islington's bustling Chapel Market. With hospitality being a
fundamental part of Vietnamese culture, Simon and Le Khanh want to
make every guest feel equally welcome -- their stated aim is to ensure
that all guests are treated just as if they were close friends or
family. They will also be introducing some Vietnamese dishes to the
menu, and have launched an Oriental buffet on Sunday lunchtimes which
is becoming extremely popular. When the busy summer season is over,
work will start on a substantial programme of renovation to bring all
of the public areas up to the same high standard as the terrace
restaurant.

Le Khanh is a keen supporter of charitable organisations (she and her
husband are both founder Trustees of Safe Anaesthesia Worldwide), and
she and Simon very much wish to retain the close links with Bodmin
Rotary that have been built up over the years.

One not-so-good piece of news is that the roadworks for the Bodmin
Growth Deal will have a major impact on the Westberry in the coming
months, with Dennison Road being closed to traffic from Sept. 2016
to at least June 2017. As this is a new business venture for Simon and
Le Khanh, the Westberry Hotel and Restaurant will need all the support
it can get from local customers, businesses and friends to help it
survive this very difficult time.

Back to School for President

Bodmin President Rtn. Peter Williams returned to the classroom last to meet the Bodmin College Interact Group - The group formed by Bodmin & Lostwithiel Rotary Clubs has been active for almost three years and are involved in a programme of Local / International Community projects.

World Duathlon Winner

On Sat. 10th Aug. Gareth Smith of Bodmin came 1st in his age group in the World Championship Duathlon held in Ottawa, Canada. He completed the course in 58mins 36secs which was 1min 4secs in front of the second competitor. Overall he came in 8th which means he would of won the next age group up of 20 - 22yrs old. Bodmin Rotary Club partly sponsored Gareth for this event and also gave him some clothing and a carry bag, clearly marked up with his name and the Bodmin Rotary Logo.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

<  Charity Duck Race  >

Bodmin Rotary Club Duck Race was held on Sunday Aug. 4th in the river at Cardinham Woods - It was good duck weather, attracting about 700 ducks - The race was keenly contested, the leading drake, an old campaigner, was soon overtaken by some of the younger ones. The winners & owners will be announced in the local press.

Bodmin Rotary Club - 60th Anniversary

The 60^th Anniversary Dinner of Bodmin Rotary Club was held at Lakeview Country Club on 29^th Oct. 2011. A large number of guests attended, including the District Governor Rtn. Maxine Stoyle, ADG Ross Jerome with members of St. Austell Rotary Club. In 1951 the St. Austell Club were the sponsors and mentors for forming the club and on 17^th Dec. 1951 the 1^st Charter Dinner was held at the Foster Hall, Bodmin.

The celebration evening was themed on the 1950's with music provided by Company "B" a popular Swing Band, a tribute for that era.    Read more....

Cheque presentation by Barclays Bank

Bodmin Rotary Club receive a cheque for International Project.

Barclays Bank, North Cornwall Business Manager, James Burden presented a cheque as matched funding, in recognition for money raised selling bottled water to motorists on the A30 during August. Supporting a project to send a fire engine and medical aid to Kosova.

 The Journey....

A Rotary aid convoy consisting of the Rotary Overseas Project Team Van & Trailer, two Fire Engines and a Landrover Fire Engine left Cornwall on Sun.Sept.18^th for the ferry and overland trip to the Balkens - A journey of almost 2000 miles. One fire engine will be going to Rahovec, Kosova, one will be going to Junik and the Landrover engine & Van full of medical equipment etc. will be delivered to Bulgise.

Presentation of new Charter to Bodmin Club

Following the disappointment of loosing the Club's framed Charter presented in 1951,probably during the course of Hotel building alterations, a replacement has been obtained.

The initiative of Assistant District Governor - Rtn. Ross Jerome managed to persuade Rotary GB&I Central Office to print a duplicate copy.

Direct Rainwater Intervention Project - (DRIP)

    Bodmin Rotary Club are supporting DRIP at present operating in Uganda - it is hoped that a team of keen young helpers will visit the areas and help with the project.

Christmas Collections

Bodmin Rotary Club - Once a year collection was again very successful and raised funds similar to previous years. This enabled the Club to distribute Christmas gifts to  330 individuals, to sheltered housing units and Bodmin Hospital, helping approx. 500 deserving people in the town.

Christmas Gifts are delivered to many elderly, lonely, deserving people who appreciate being thought of at Christmas - A friendly face calling with a gift and prepared to have a chat can greatly help the season of good will. Any surplus money from the collection is spent on local community needs.

Supporting Bodmin Youth Football

Bodmin Rotary Club recently supported the sponsorship of Bodmin Town Youth FC under 15's on a tour of Holland & Germany.  The twenty members played a number of fixtures, winning most and visited the famous PSV Eindhoven Stadium in Holland.

The trip was a great success and allowed the boys to make friends and experience the cultural differences of the countries.

"BODMIN and LOSTWITHIEL INTERACT CLUB"

Over the past year, the Rotary Clubs of Bodmin and Lostwithiel have helped to form a Rotary Interact Club in Bodmin College.  On Wednesday 23rd November the Rotary Clubs of Bodmin and Lostwithiel, together with the District Governor Maxine Stoyle and members of the new club, gathered at The Westberry Hotel, Bodmin.They all enjoyed a meal to celebrate the formation of the new Interact Club, the first to be formed southwest of Bristol.

The Certificate of Inauguration was presented to the president of the club, Miss Cassie Brewer, by the District Governor of Rotary District 1290, Rtn. Maxine Stoyle.

Were here for them and their families wherever they are. Each year, we support more than 50,000 people in the Armed Forces community. Handover to new President -2012

The handover to new President David Jenkins took place at the Westberry Hotel recently. Last years President, Allan, handed over the chain of office and wished David an enjoyable and successful year.

The evening was followed by " Desert Island Discs"  presented by our own Roy Plumley (or Kirsty Young !) -  Rtn. Peter Old.

'Castaway' Pres. Dave Jenkins - A very Interesting life history from Royal Navy to Post Master to Broadcaster and a varied selection of music made a very enjoyable evening.

Bodmin Rotary - Christmas Parcels

Every Year Bodmin Rotary Club spend the days leading upto Christmas playing seasonal music on their age-old Barrel Organ, collecting money for Christmas gifts and local charities.  The gifts are distributed to approx. 300 deserving and lonely people who Rotary feel need to be thought of at Christmas. In addition, donations are made to the Sheltered Housing units social funds within the town.

The money collected and distributed is usually in the region of 3000.00.

Rotary President Dave Jenkins would like to thank the people of Bodmin for being so generous and allowing us to help people at this time of the year.

Group Study Exchange - GSE District 1290 visit to Romania May/ June 2013

This will be the last opportunity for our Rotary District 1290 to participate in the GSE programme and it will be a great honour to be visiting Romania - a country that has close links with our district through the work of our overseas project team.
