By member David Milsted

The speaker on 6 November 2018 was David Milsted. He spoke about "The Second Boer War - 11 October 1899 to 31 May 1902". This was a war between the British Empire and the Boers, the white Afrikaan-speaking descendants from the Dutch East India Company.

The war revolved around the control of the gold mines which were very valuable. This was an example of guerrilla warfare and included the famous sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking. Well known people involved in the war included Colonel Baden-Powell and Douglas Haig (later Lord Haig).

The talk was illustrated with ephemera of the war and postage stamps.
