Rotary Young Writer Competition

Congratulations to Zoe Lewis of Cowbridge School who won the Senior Southern Wales Young Writer Competition with her piece "The Glass Elephant". Zoe's entry has now gone forward to the national competition and we wish her every success.

Rotary Young Photographer Competition

Two pupils of Cowbridge School have had success in the Rotary Young Photographer Competition. The theme of the competition was "Rebuilding" and Annabell Morris won the club round with Grace Williams as a close runner-up. Both entries were submitted to the District competition which covers Southern Wales and this time Grace was the overall winner with Annabelle as runner-up. Grace's photograph now goes forward to the national competition.

Annabelle Morris - "My aim when considering the theme of rebuilding was to create an image that deconstructed the way that we look at a building. I wanted to play on the idea of simultaneous perspectives in a nod to cubism. My choice of building was influenced by its grade 1 listed status that in itself makes any building work on it come with a unique set of challenges. The small details that someone may first notice are the same reasons that repair work has become increasingly difficult. I wanted to show all sides of this structure through a rebuilt image."

Grace Williams - "I wanted to highlight how nature itself is constantly rebuilding against humanities destruction of it. My idea was to highlight this in a small, often unnoticed way that nature claws back; through the cracks of our foundations. I chose to only use colour on the leaves to emphasise their vibrance. I wanted to take the image from a low angle to help bring attention to an area that we so often ignore."
