The Grange Pavilion is a modern, purpose built, Community Centre at the heart of the multi-ethnic Grangetown community in the centre of Cardiff. RI Director Harriette Verwey, DG Ian Hughes, and members of ’Cardiff Bay Rotary, were greeted by Mhairi McVicar of the Cardiff University Community Gateway, Ali Abdi, Community Leader, Charlotte Brown, Pavilion Development Officer and Rotarian David Reeves.
Mhairi and David delivered a short history of the project including reference to the very first Rotary cheque of £150 which was used to open the bank account. Further, substantial donations were made by Cardiff Bay Rotary to fund the architectural design, which acted as a catalyst for the further investment of £1.8M required to complete the project.
On the bookings “wall”, they saw the wide range of community activities using the Pavilion. Before they left, the party engaged in a discussion on flexibility and frequency of club meetings and joint club ventures.
This project demonstrates how initial seed funding can often generate wider interest and lead to greater impact.
