Rotary club of Swansea Bay has been successful in meeting the criteria for a global grant from The Rotary Foundation to carry out a major water project in Ndori, Western Kenya.
This follows partnership fund raising with the Rotary Clubs of Bridgend, Pontllanfraith, Aberdare, Newport Uskmouth and Cardiff Breakfast and the help of Southern Wales Rotary District Foundation team.
With this help and partmership with the Rotary Club of Karen, Kenya we have been able to provide the finances and criteria required to apply for the matching global grant.
Like most Rotary clubs, Swansea Bay’s main fund raising efforts are for local community based charities.
But we also raise money for international projects that follow Rotary International’s aims of peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health and education and literacy.
Swansea Bay Rotary has already completed three successful water projects in Nakuru, Kenya in the early 2000s.
The new project is set in Ndori, Western Kenya, where villagers have been unable to overcome the effects of severe droughts in the area for a variety of reasons. This has resulted in increased poverty, malnutrition, hunger and destitution.
The project seeks to address this by drilling a fresh borehole to provide reliable fresh drinking water that can be used for drinking and irrigation. Irrigation of crops will eventually allow the region to become more self-sufficient.
The Rotary Foundation is Rotary International’s own charity and one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the World. It is celebrating its centenary this year.
TRF has spent over $3 billion on humanitarian programmes across the world. This includes spearheading the movement to eradicate polio worldwide,
