The Rotary Club of Romney Marsh is the No.1 club in the Southeast

Assistant Governor, Peter Sherred, presented an award recognising the club as No 1 in the district per capita for giving to the Rotary International Foundation charity, one of the most effective and well managed charitable organisations in the world.

This prestigious award reflects the generosity of Romney Marsh members in helping Rotarians all over the world to help and support people in desperate need particularly, In recent times, those in Ukraine and in the area of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Peter Sherred said that he was proud of the work that our club was, and is, undertaking and that the award reflects the Rotary principle of ‘Service before Self’.

Stephen Hugues, the current President of the club, accepted the award on behalf of the members and remarked “Whilst our main priority is to support local charities and good causes, Rotary is an international body and when help is called for we also do our best to help where we can.”

It was a welcome surprise for the club to receive this award and reflects the efforts of members have shown to support people in need but with Christmas now behind us, our thoughts turn to the future planned events for the remainder of the Rotary year.

We were also delighted to welcome a new member to our club, Jan Riddington a retired carer who has moved into our area from Dartford where she lived for over 40 years and where she was a member of Dartford Rotary Club. 

Jan said “I retired to Lydd last February and wanted to continue with my Rotary life and so contacted Romney Marsh club and was thrilled to be invited to one of their meetings where they all made me feel totally comfortable and very welcome so I was delighted to have been accepted as a full member on the 19th January 2023. 

My interests include theatre, dance, music, cinema and, my favourite, eating out! Being a member of Rotary helps me integrate into the community of my new life on the Marsh as well as carrying on with being of service to others and helping to raise monies for our nominated charities. 

As a carer I’m particularly interested in the involvement of the various dementia groups in the Romney Marsh area and look forward to participating in their good works in this field.”
