Support for Ukraine
As soon as our International Service Committee members realised the urgent need for more money for Ukraine, particularly for medicines and generators to keep the hospitals going, they asked Tonbridge Rotary for a donation. This was agreed at £2,000 and the whole club supported this. £1,000 has already been paid for medicines and the remaining £1,000 is being held pending a decision on the best way to supply the generators. We have been particularly thanked for the speed of our response.
European Youth Exchange
The Croisière Exchange was originated in 1970 by the then President of Halle Rotary Club, René Lambert, with five Clubs: Halle – Belgium, Goes – Holland, Senlis – France, Gelsenkirchen - Germany and Gembloux - Belgium. During the 1980’s Tonbridge was invited to join and Gembloux left the group in 1994.
The object of the exchange is to promote understanding between young people of different countries by having them learn about the language and culture in the regions in which they travel. The exchange lasts for one week and is for young people from 16 to 18 years old.
Each Club sends 4 students, who should have some connection with Rotary, ideally 2 male and 2 female, and they are hosted by Rotary families. The programme for the week is set by the host country and includes educational visits, entertainment, usually some form of Community Service and above all, fellowship between the different nationalities. The students are expected to make a short presentation to the host Club on the last evening and to their own sponsor Club on their return. The costs involved are travel (normally via Eurostar) and travel insurance. A small amount of spending money is advisable but otherwise all expenses are met by the host Rotary Club.
