Shoes sent to Shoe Aid UK
Earlier this year fellow Rotarian and club member Keith Griffin started an appeal to donate unwanted shoes to help those in need and without suitable footwear.
Shoe Aid is a UK charity that was set up to tackle Shoe Poverty.
They believe it is wrong that:
.... millions of unwanted shoes end up in landfill, almost 2 million every week, an environmental disaster and tragic waste.
.... over 4 million people wear unsuitable shoes, damaging to foot health, academic potential and self-esteem, not just now, but later in life.
There is global footwear poverty with significant implications. 1500 million people worldwide are without shoes of which 300 million are children. 70 million of those children are unable to access education because shoes are a requirement as part of school uniform.
The original collection target was 100 shoe pairs. Thanks to the generosity of friends, families and the community at large the appeal has taken in excess of 600 pairs of assorted ladies, mens and children's footwear.
All have been sorted, cleaned as necessary, paired up and bagged in tens and sent to the Shoe Aid charity in Nottingham. Shoe Aid will sort and sanitise everything donated and then distribute them to the needy both in the UK and overseas.
We have now stopped collecting shoes.
Thank you everyone.
