RWB Community Nature Reserve

November 2020 update

Lockdown 2 came just at the wrong time. Having ordered 100 tree saplings from the Woodlands Trust we were suddenly denied the opportunity to enlist volunteers to help plant them. However, Dave Gardner and John Loran spent a socially distanced morning at the Reserve and planted the specimens to a plan that broadly followed the Wiltshire Wildlife proposals following their site visit earlier in the year.

We chose the Woodland Trust "Wild Harvest" tree pack comprising Elder, Hazel, Rowan, Crab Apple, Blackthorn and Dog Rose - 100 trees that will provide year round flowers and fruits for pollinators, birds and other wildlife. At the same time our planting should enhance the look of the Reserve and improve a section of the hedgerow alongside the main road.

Once Covid restrictions allow, we plan to put out a call for volunteers to clear space along the Lindisfarne boundary, in order to plant a native species hedge that will provide a natural security barrier between private properties and the Reserve. A Woodlands Trust grant of free trees has been applied for and if successful should arrive in time for spring planting.
