Royal Wootton Bassett Rotary
Junior Youth Speaks Competition (10th February 2020 at the Memorial Hall RWB)
Another excellent evening and a wonderful showcase for junior school children in our area. This is now a well-established event and it was clear the children had done a lot of preparation. This year we tried to encourage speakers to avoid using extensive notes and added ‘use of the microphone and connection with the audience’ to our marking criteria. Five Junior schools took part and we all believe that the standard of public speaking from the children was the highest yet.
Topics for the teams’ speeches were: Longleaze - ‘Banksy’; Lydiard Millicent - ‘Saving Our Planet’; Noremarsh - ‘Three Inspirational Ladies (Ada Lovelace, Greta Thunburg & Malala)’; St Bartholomew’s - ‘Human rights & Equalities (Disabled rights, Refugee Righrs & Womens Rights)’; and St Mary’s - ‘Influences on the World Today (Technology, Malala, Martin Luther King & Sir David Attenborough)’
Shirley Ludford from Swindon 105.5 Radio compered the evening and our panel of judges (Philip Porter, RWB Mayor Steve Watts and our President John Loran) judged St Mary’s to be the winners. Our thanks go to all those in the club who helped make the event such a success and to Mark Mudd for coordinating the evening.
Congratulations to the winning team from St Mary’s CE Primary School and to everyone who took part.
Our next schools competition is the Junior Schools Quiz on 26th March at Longleaze Primary School, RWB.
