Playlist for Life Help Point to launch in RWB

The Rotary Club Of Royal Wootton Bassett & District are now a registered Help Point for Playlist For Life

We are launching a weekly Help Point Drop-In center to support and advise carers and families of people living with dementia to identify and source music to create a personal playlist.

Playlist for Life is a charity based in Glasgow and covers the whole of the UK. It was started in 2013 by writer and broadcaster Sally Magnusson after the death of her Mother Mamie who had been living with dementia.

Sally and her sisters cared for Mamie at home and couldn’t help but notice how music helped them on a daily basis to care for her. They spent many hours listening to Mamie’s favourite songs and sang along with her. Sally wanted to share what she had learned with others who found themselves in a similar situation. That’s when Playlist for Life was Born.

The PfL mission is a very simple one – to get a personally meaningful playlist to everyone who is living with dementia to make life easier and happier not only for them but also for the people who care for them.

They want to spread the word so that everyone understands:-
Why music is special
What is the best music to play
And when is the optimum time to listen to it

Music is special because it access lots of parts of the brain at the same time – just like a firework display. If a part of the brain is damaged then music will reach other parts. When music is played it helps the person recall memories and abilities that were thought previously to have been lost. 

It calms the person down and they are less agitated.
It helps the Carer to look after them and can be used to calm the person down before undertaking tasks that would normally agitate them.
It brings people together, keeps families together and provides a structure and focus of a visit.

Music can include:-
Personally meaningful music - that evokes positive memories from the past
From when they were children, as they were growing up
Special events like wedding days etc
