Victoria Robson spoke to us passionately about her work as the current leader of The DOOR organisation. This was setup originally in Stroud 31 years ago. They currently employ just over 30 people, many of whom are trained youth work professionals, but also with opportunity for volunteers.
They provide Open Access and Community Youth work at several locations within the broad area – aiming to assist vulnerable young people in society, and support to parents. An alarming comment was the wide occurrence of domestic abuse to parents by some of the young folks.
Another sobering statistic – some of their support groups prior to the pandemic were typically working with about 30 young people – but since then, this is now about 5 times higher in number! They are seeing very often significant delays in external statutory help being available to young people in need and this is a key opportunity and need for the assistance from The DOOR. Providing help on a 1-1 basis, with the objective of creating a “trusted adult” helper for those in need.
Thank you Victoria for a most informative explanation of the challengiing, but vital, work from your group.
