Storm damage in Fiji-Stonehouse Member assisting loc support

Rotary Australia sending aid to Fiji island of Taveuni

ROTARY Australia has also landed a helping hand to rebuild schools on Taveuni that were affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Rotary member Peter Malden said the gift of building materials was sent after a meeting with Geoff Amos, the president of Rotary Club of Taveuni.

"In a combined effort between Rotary New Zealand World Community Service and Rotary Australia a 20-foot container has been loaded to go to Taveuni to assist in restoring the schools and teachers' houses on the island," Mr Malden said.

"From monetary donations received in New Zealand and Australia the Rotary Club of Boronia purchased exactly what was asked for by the Rotary Club of Taveuni Island and new materials from very supportive Melbourne suppliers who all gave the project their best possible and lowest prices.

"Gibson Freight have been of great assistance with the container logistics and shipping."

Mr Malden said all Rotarians played a vital role in putting the gift items together for the children of Taveuni.

"We love the island and we love helping the children and this is a great opportunity to help students rebuild their lives through the environment learning of a classroom," he said.

"The donated items also include desks, chairs, bolts, screws, brackets, bracing, tools and much more school materials, books and storage containers.

"The Rotary Club of Boronia also purchased 13 brand new ex-army canvas awnings to be used by the Rotary Club of Taveuni to construct."   Our Rotary friend Heather Anderson is a mebr of Boronia Club, and in the photo is her husband Lawrie,  one of our Stonehouse members, assisting the effort.
