Guided walk in Sheepscombe (11am @ Village Hall)

Rotary Guided Sheepscombe Walk.  Saturday 16^th April 2011. 

On Saturday 16^th April we gathered at Sheepscombe in readiness for a guided walk hosted by local historian Elisabeth Skinner. The weather was just perfect, with glorious sunshine and just the right temperature.

Our starting point was the Village Church, which it was revealed by Elisabeth had an interesting history including controversy over it's tower, and an assertive vicar who perhaps had not been the most popular in the village at times! This was just the start of an amazing insight into the history of the village, including visits to the site of the former village mill, the now thriving primary school, the former village Blacksmith's, and an interesting building which had been used as a retreat with alternative ways of living for those who wanted to escape normal life, and latterly as a vegetarian Bed and Breakfast, which in the 1950's was perhaps rarer to find than in today's times!

The walk concluded in the local village pub, the Butcher's Arms, where we enjoyed a good lunch and well deserved drink.
