Ask Danny was established in 2023 by Danny’s mother Maria Lynch. Josie Cook (Danny’s sister) and Cinnitta Allen (Danny’s carer and now close friend) came to talk to us about Danny and the work of Ask Danny.
Danny had learning disabilities (LD) and also a heart problem. Whilst in hospital for a valve replacement he developed pneumonia. A tracheotomy procedure went wrong and he ended up on life support.
Maria realised that there were no resources for adults with learning disabilities in the hospital so after Danny passed away she set up a box for each ward containing colouring books and crayons and small sensory/fidget items to occupy patients. All patients receive a comfort bear to keep – all wearing an Ask Danny T-shirt. They are also hoping to place the boxes in doctors surgeries
Sadly, there are only 2 part time nurses at the hospital who can work with LD patients so there is a goal to raise money to fund more nurses and to, in the future, set up an annexe for adults with LD.
Ask Danny organise a variety of events to raise money including Family Fund Days, Children’s Parties and Bingo. The monies raised from these events help fund the boxes. Items are also donated from Tesco, Limitless South West Ltd, AWBS and other retailers for the boxes and fund raising events
In around eight weeks’ time a café at Cheney Manor Garden Centre called Dannys will open. The garden outside is being developed and will include all sorts of things. Local businesses have helped with the cost of materials for both the café and garden.
In addition to Maria, Josie and Cinnitta there are around 10-15 volunteers.
