It was a light bulb moment for Jeff Tucker when he watched his friends, Carl and Ian, pass the finish line of the London Marathon in 2022. The moment shared between them was a celebration of an achievement, all having had their own personal struggles in previous years.
They had all been through tough times and they found that seeking help from readily available services was not easy. It became clear that finding support and guidance when in a dark place is an isolating experience. Even if you know where to turn, it takes courage, confidence, and knowhow to take the necessary steps.
The light bulb that was switched on for Jeff was a unique idea. Connect individuals with a “Best Mate,” someone who had navigated similar challenges, sought help, and emerged stronger. The Best Mate would be a compassionate companion providing a safe space for open dialogue, free from judgment and full of understanding.
And so, 2 years ago, Best Mates was born. A new Wiltshire based registered charity set up by 3 best friends, simply to make a difference to people's lives. It's dedicated to extending a helping hand, sharing experiences and encouraging individuals on a broader scale. A friend who understands, supports and guides people through tough times.
In the firm belief that no one should face challenges alone, Best Mates gives the strength that comes from shared experiences. Its strap line: "Together, We Got Ya."
Best Mates recruits volunteers on a continuous basis. Called “Mates” these volunteers are people who have all been through their own unique situations. Men and women who have managed to navigate and seek the help they needed to get their lives back on track.
When people reach out to Best Mates they are matched up with one of the “Mates” who will then make contact and spend time with them. Meeting up or talking on the phone to have a non-judgemental conversation, full of understanding and information of what they did to pull themselves out of their situation. The "Mates" offer guidance and support to help people change their lives for the better.
Jeff has recently launched a new initiative which is working really well: Walk ‘N’ Talk. There are Walk ‘N’ Talks in Swindon (Coate Water and Lydiard Park), Folkestone, Melksham and Yate. He hopes to soon have one in Cheltenham as well.
Across five Walk and Talks in one week in February there were 45 people stepping out of the house; 45 people having a conversation; 45 people sharing a laugh, a worry, a story and 45 people feeling a little less alone. Some came looking for support. Some came for company. Some just wanted fresh air and to be around others. There was no pressure, no spotlight, just people walking side by side, talking about whatever felt right in that moment. Jeff said: "It’s simple, and it works."
Best Mates is doing some wonderful work and all members present wished Jeff every success in the years to come. Swindon is blessed to have such caring and good people such as he.
