On Friday 8 April we held our annual Student Chef competition at the Swindon College, North Star.
The competition was split into two separate categories with 3 teams of 2 third-year students (Level 3) and 12 individual first-year students (Level 1).
The competitors had to produce a 3-course meal, all within a specified budget, and were judged on presentation, flavour and technical skill by 2 professional chefs, Steve Matthews and Steve Shore, plus Steve Davison and Chris Ockwell from the Rotary club. The standard of cooking was excellent and the judges' task becomes more and more difficult each year.
The Level 3 Winners were Marta Tavares and Daisy Long and they were both awarded with a 5" Cook's knife. The runners up received a 3.5" Cook's knife and the team coming 3rd were presented with a cook book each.
Lindsay Wickens won the Level 1 section and she too was presented with a 5" Cook's knife. And, as in Level 3, the 2 runners up received a 3.5" Cook's knife each.
The Rotary Swindon North & Thamesdown Young Chef Competition began in 2012/13 and is run in conjunction with Swindon College. After a break due to Covid it is hoped that it will now continue on an annual basis as both the College and the students look forward to it.
