The 24th Rotary Charity Golf Day raised the fantastic sum of £2,200 for Inner Flame

A shot gun fired on the 17th tee signalled the start of the Rotary Charity Golf Day 2017 on Friday 4th August at Ogbourne Downs Golf Club, Swindon.

Organised annually since 1994 by the Rotary Clubs of Swindon North and Swindon Thamesdown the Charity Golf Day has generally enjoyed good weather but this one, the 24th, was the second in succession that had to be postponed due to heavy rain.

15 teams (60 players) negotiated the 5 miles of undulating fairways, rough, bunkers and other hazards in bright but blustery conditions.  Returning home in first place was team C K AUTOS with the excellent score of 90 points.

In addition to place prizes individual prizes were also on offer.  There was one for the golfer whose ball was closest to the centre line on the 1st fairway and another for the player whose tee shot fell nearest to the pin on the 17th green.

The day ended with dinner in the Club House during which further fundraising ruses took place to squeeze more cash out of the player’s pockets.  There was a “£5 note draw”,”Irish Bingo” and “Heads & Tails”, with cash prize incentives.

Over the years the Rotary Charity Golf Day has raised in excess of £60,000 for local charities and the 2017 event produced £2,200 for the benefit of “Inner Flame”.  Following the dinner, a representative of “Inner Flame” expressed his thanks for the organisation of the day and spoke briefly outlining the purpose of the charity.   A cheque will be presented to “Inner Flame” at a subsequent Rotary Club meeting with both clubs present.

The Rotary Clubs wish to acknowledges with thanks the assistance and support they received from the Chairman, the Executive Committee and the staff at Ogbourne Downs Golf Club and for allowing them to use the superb facilities there and for serving an excellent meal to end the day.  Above all, thanks are due also to the event sponsor, “Homes in Town” of Malmesbury.
