Club’s Car Treasure Hunt

A Swashbuckling Success!

First Friday in September and the Rotary Club of West Fife's Car Treasure Hunt proved to be an engaging and entertaining morning adventure that brought together nine enthusiastic members and partners for a delightful challenge through the West Fife countryside.

Event organiser Mark Todd set the tone perfectly for the morning's adventure, greeting participants at the starting point of St Columba's Church in Robertson Road, Dunfermline, dressed in full pirate regalia (as demonstrated above!). His commitment to the treasure hunt theme was evident from the outset, creating an atmosphere of fun and excitement as he saw off the six participating cars on their quest for treasure.

The carefully crafted route took participants on a journey through Kingseat, Kelty, Steelend, Cowstrandburn, Gowkhall, Craigluscar, Bowershall, and Townhill before returning to the starting point at St Columba's Church.

The treasure hunt featured clues that truly tested participants' problem-solving skills. Mark's creative riddles, such as the challenges presented at Kelty's Flower Place Smithy and Jackson's Accident Repair Centre, demonstrated his talent for wordplay and lateral thinking:

- "This scented but fishy limited business is what to trade?"
- "Did Michael find it a 'Thriller' in setting up this sideline, what is its main purpose?"

It certainly helped f you could 'get inside' Mark's head and some of his clues proved more challenging than anticipated, leading to longer completion times and the occasional wrong turn. This only added to the adventure and sense of accomplishment when solutions were finally discovered.

The competition proved remarkably close, with the top four teams separated by just a couple of points, testament to both the quality of Mark's clue-setting and the determination of all participants. The joint winners, achieving an impressive 54 points, were the teams of Douglas & Christine and Stuart & Joan, who demonstrated good teamwork and puzzle-solving abilities.

Despite any navigation challenges encountered along the route, the spirit of friendship and camaraderie remained strong throughout. All participants gathered afterward to enjoy a well-deserved feast of bacon rolls, scones, tea, and coffee while Mark revealed the answers to the clues. The relaxed atmosphere and shared laughter confirmed that relationships had survived the challenge intact!

The event also generated positive community impact, with the ladies in the café at St Columba's expressing genuine appreciation for both the donations received and the assistance with clearing up afterward. Their enthusiasm for potentially hosting another event (perhaps not on a Friday when they're at their busiest!) speaks volumes about the positive impression made by the Rotary group.

The success of this car treasure hunt has clearly whetted appetites for future adventures. With Mark's excellent organisation and creative script-writing proving such a hit, plans are already being considered for another treasure hunt sometime next year.

Recognition

Special thanks go to Mark Todd for his outstanding organisation, creative clue-writing, and commitment to making the event memorable – his pirate costume alone deserves special mention! His attention to the theme and his endless enthusiasm transformed what could have been a simple drive into a genuine adventure that brought the club together.
