Safer Communities Fife - Older Drivers

Tue, Jun 25th 2024 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Two speakers - Bill Hunter & Gillian Kelly

The attendance of a club member’s wife on a 65 plus course alerted Mark Todd to the guest speakers Gillian Kelly and Bill Hunter from Fife Safer Communities.  The former road traffic officers delivered advice from road safety education, child seats etc with an aim to reduce serious injuries and road traffic fatalities.

Young people are very vulnerable. 1 in 4 have accidents in their first year of driving but older drivers will find it much more difficult to recover from a road accident.

Subjects covered:-

  • Eyesight be up to date with your eyesight tests. Ability to be comfortable driving at night and in low sun.
  • Drink driving. Scotland has the lowest alcohol limits in UK
  • Drug driving including prescription drugs. Cannabis takes a long time to get out of the system
  • Illegal use of mobile phones and pedestrians on their mobiles
  • Distractions including talking to passengers
  • Headlight glare

Donald Mackay gave the club’s vote of thanks.
