Curtailment of our club’s entertainment, fellowship and sport activities in the last twelvemonths due to the measures imposed by the COVID pandemic may have been less than the previous year, but still mean for quite a quiet time.
Although ZOOM video conferencing was once again utilised to afford the club regular ‘virtual fellowship’ via online meetings, the majority of membership were keen to resume meetings in person as soon as was possible, albeit with the spectre of omicron lurking over us. By no means ideal, the zoom meetings did again ensure that the club’s activities continued throughout these difficult times.
As to entertainment, we did of course have a Festive Evening planned for December, which suffered another eleventh hour cancellation due to infection numbers rising, so we once again reverted to a lively interactive ‘Festive Zoom’ on December 15th with suitably libated participants quizzing, chatting. The evening proper was rescheduled as a Spring Christmas Dinner at the Garvock House Hotel on March 29th and much enjoyed by those attending.
The club did have a team in place to compete in the October scheduled annual Rotary Gavel Competition, but new pandemic restrictions postponed that, and rather than repeat last year’s online offering, it was rescheduled to March of this year, by which time several of our original team were unavailable and a last-minute reorganisation of our matches meant we had to withdraw.
As last, to date this year club sport has been limited to golf, in the form of the Ken Forbes Quaich (final between Neil Spriddle and Stuart Nicol on 25th May) ably arranged by Ian Grieve, who has also arranged another fun golf day for members, partners and friends on the 22nd June.
Our planned spring ramble did not go ahead due to lack of numbers, possibly due to restrictions easing, and everyone having plenty else to catch up on rather than a leisurely stroll to break the monotony as previously.
Going forward, the aforementioned golf, bowling, and perhaps a summer barbeque should now be possible in the next few months, and hopefully some fresh ideas from members
