Speaker this week was Culross resident, Ken Munnoch who addressed the club on ‘A Year with VSO in Malawi’. 25 members heard the former high school teacher give a very enthusiastic talk about his work in Mangochi at the south end of the Lake Malawi from March 2019 to March 2020.
Malawi has a very young population. 90% of the population are subsidence farmers. Ken and his wife were involved in a teaching project financed initially by Scottish Government using 30 tablet computers with headsets teaching in classrooms.
The tablets were powered by car batteries and solar panels. That part worked very well as did the special software.
VSO provided a motorbike to get around town but Ken did eventually buy a car. Accommodation was provided by VSO.
Ken showed images of pottery making, wood burning (which was an emerging problem) and wildlife, with impressive shots of animals and bird life.
Ken and his wife hope to return in 2021. The club’s vote of thanks was given by Aileen.
