This, the 36th annual walk will, however, be like no one before. Mindful of precautions due to Covid, for the first time in 36 years, tour-goers won't be facing the often treacherous icy walk through the Glen's winding pathways - instead, you can follow along from the comfort of your own home as the Heritage Walk goes virtual.
Jack Pryde has co-ordinated this popular head-clearing Dunfermline tradition
since its inception and this year Jack will present a virtual tour to be
launched online at the usual start time of 1.30pm. on 2nd January. While Covid-19 restrictions mean that groups
cannot gather in the normal way, the socially distanced online version does
have its advantages.
Participants will not be at the mercy of the weather, and as the event has
often clashed with New Year football fixtures, football fans can watch the
annual walk as part of their pre-match warm-up before tuning in to Dunfermline
Athletic and Raith Rovers on Pars TV.
Jack Pryde who also operates Discover Dunfermline Tours http://www.discoverdunfermline.com/ said:-
“While it is disappointing that 2021 cannot be welcomed in with our usual Heritage Walk I am delighted that we have found a way to continue in these strange times. This annual tour has for decades given locals the chance to find out more about the town's rich historic past, and of course a journey through the life of our most famous son, Andrew Carnegie.
“Over the years we have been joined by people from all around the world who have been lucky enough to be in Dunfermline over Hogmanay. This year's virtual tour will take that story around the globe in very different way, a tour that can be followed by house-bound locals and digital-tourists alike."
The New Year Walk will premiere at 1.30pm on Saturday 2nd January here and will be available on-demand thereafter.
