Busy Month for West Fife Golfers

June has been a busy month for golfing members of the Rotary Club of West Fife.

On Thursday 8 June, Matt McVicars, Brian Merrett, Eric Spreng and Charlie Watson represented the club at the J C Thomson Trophy and Jackson Christie Qualifier played over one round at Pitfirrane.

Matt won the event with a net 68 and collected the J C Thomson Trophy.  Eric came third with a net 69, and with three players qualifying for the Jackson Christie District Final at Forfar on Tuesday 20 June, both Matt and Eric 'made the cut'.

In the event Matt could not travel to Forfar, so Eric was the club's sole representative on the day at the 36 hole event.  However his scores of net 72 and net 74 could only secure 8th place.

During the week beginning Monday 12 June Eric Spreng and Graham Watson again represented the club at the Rotary International Golf Competition at St Andrews.  Since both of them had qualified for the Scottish team last year which was pipped at the post by Ireland, both lads were hopeful of making the team again.

Contrasting stories this year however.  It was not to be for Eric.  12 inches from a hole in one at the 15th on the Eden Course on the Monday, and 8 inches from a hole in one at the 11th hole on the Old Course on the Tuesday, Eric's total of 57 stableford points was not enough.  However Graham's total of 65 points was enough to secure a place in the 9 man Scottish team.

And what a competition it turned out to be with Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and the International team battling it out over the New Course, the Jubilee Course and the Old Course.  It could not have been closer, and Scotland eventually pipped England by only 3 points.

Congratulations to Graham Watson.  This is the first time that a member of the West Fife club has been a member of the winning Scotland team in this event.

There is not now an awful lot that the golfing section of the Rotary Club of West Fife has failed to achieve during the last five years ! !
