October 2024 Bulletin
From the President Nigel Gilhead
World Polio Day
World Polio Day is on 24th October, when we were hoping, again, to work with Cheltenham Council and the Friends of Sandford Park in order to enable the children from St John's CE Primary School to plant crocuses in the Park. Unfortunately the school staff have had to deal with recent flooding and are unable to take part this year, so alternatively; we are distributing the bulbs to the Sandford volunteer gardening team, Cheltenham Future Club, and the Hatherley Park volunteer gardening team.
Thursday October 17th, 6pm, Leonardo Hotel

The event is at the Leonardo Hotel, GL51 0TS (formerly Jurys Inn), starting at 6pm, with a finger buffet, £15 each. The Mayor has already accepted our invitation, please come and support the event, guests welcome.

Pedal for Maggies Tony Pawley
Sponsorship I received for the cycle ride for Maggie’s Cheltenham on Sunday 22nd September totalled over £1,000 including Gift Aid. Amazing! Brilliant!
The contributions from Rotarians were outstanding.
VERY MANY THANKS from me and from Maggie’s.
The ride went much better than I expected, given the forecast and given that it was raining when I left home at 07:30, and continued raining most of the time. (Weather forecasters these days would have said it wasn’t rain, it was only showers – to the rest of us, it’s all RAIN!)
I usually avoid starting out in the rain, whether cycling or walking, but accept that it can come on later. Luckily, I finished by lunchtime and avoided the heavy outburst later.
I kept dry wearing my old waterproof yellow jacket, and new waterproof overshoes that I only bought on Saturday afternoon! I was surprised how comparatively dry my shorts stayed.
There was a refreshment stop at Jackdaw’s Castle but we weren't welcomed by horseracing Irish royalty. A helper was taking photos of riders as they arrived; when I told them that they needed my mother’s permission, they just laughed.
When I set off, the organisers agreed that (in view of the weather) I had done the last 6 miles of the 40 first – Gotherington to College Baths Road – so I finished at home and then drove Linda down to the Fire Station for the bunfight. Plenty of food because some had cried off because of the weather and it’s unlikely that anyone would have signed up on the day. Any left-over food was going to be shared between the Fire Station people and the hospital oncology staff.
Many thanks again for your generous sponsorship. It will make a big difference to the support that Maggie’s can give for people in our area with cancer, along with their families and friends.

Just a line to say I’m living,
That I’m not amongst the dead.
Though I’m getting more forgetful
And mixed up in the head.
I’ve got used to my arthritis,
To my dentures I’m resigned.
I can cope with my bi-focals,
But – yet gods – I miss my mind.
Sometimes I can’t remember
When I’ standing by the stairs,
If I’m going up for something,
Or have just come down from there.
And before the fridge so often
My mind is full of doubt;
Now did I put some food away,
Or come to take some out?
If it’s not my turn to write dear
I hope you won’t get sore.
I think I might have written
And don’t want to be a bore,
And wish that you lived near,
But now it’s time to mail this
And say “goodbye my dear”.
I’m standing beside the mail box
And my face – it sure is red,
Instead of posting this to you
I’ve opened it instead!
