Rotary Club of Cheltenham North
June 2024 Bulletin
Congratulations
Our President, Kevin, and Pip welcomed their first grandchild into the world a little earlier than expected. Weighing in at 6lbs, India (Liberty) and Mum are both doing well. It is so amazing being a grandparent – enjoy every moment.
The Pendyrus Male Choir John Phillip
The clamour for a repeat of our concert in 2023 was well justified on May 18th when Pendyrus Male Choir excelled themselves.
The quality of the experience was enhanced by the contribution of Cheltenham’s very own Cathy Keating who rendered Summertime from Porgy & Bess and Quando me ’n vo’ from Puccini’s La Boheme. Pendyrus are blessed in having in their Musical Director, Ieuan Jones, a rare talent capable of extracting outstanding performances from the sixty or so singers.
Their programme embraced several favourite pieces such as Gwahoddiad, Myfanwy and Calon Lan together with several English standards and some new pieces such as Tangnefeddwyr which they are preparing for the National Eisteddfod and their appearance at the 80th commemoration of D Day in Normandy later this year.
In 2024 the choir is celebrating its centenary and we were privileged to have them grace our charity concert with their presence.
Ticket sales, despite noble efforts by several club members, were approximately 25% fewer than last year which means that we will have significantly less to distribute to local charities. I am immensely grateful to the project team of Vivien Barr, Bernie Campbell, Duncan Ivory, Linda Pawley, Beth Phillip and Gill Rouse for their unstinting contributions, and the support of so many members in making the evening a pleasant experience for our patrons.
Gloucestershire Young Carers Vivien Barr
Our club has given several years support to YOUNG CARERS and on Sunday June 23rd our Community committee will be at the Cheltenham Festival of Food and Drink in Montpellier Gardens all day ,in a purple gazebo. We will be handing out helium filled balloons and jumper stickers to children and literature to adults to publicize the splendid work done locally for YOUNG CARERS over the past 30 years.
At the same time at Over Farm Park ,near Gloucester, there will be a Fun Day , in 2 sessions, organised for the Young Carers families to enjoy a time together with the amazing support workers who help them all in so many ways. Our committee funds have provided prizes for the 2 Tombolas ( morning and afternoon) and we wish them all a very " Happy Anniversary " as they continue their support of the caring young family members ( aged between 8 - 24 years.)
