Rotary Club of Cheltenham North
May 2024 Bulletin
New Members Welcome to new members Steven and Diane Mills who were inducted into our club on Monday 15th April. We look forward to getting to know you both better.
An update on the 100 years of running the Gold Cup and the Community Grants awarded.
Club Members will recall that the Jockey Club with association with Rotary in Cheltenham were collecting money to local organisations within the 5 GL 50 -54 post codes.
Grants of £500 up to £2,000 were available to help worthy causes. So far this has attracted over 40 applications. Of these, 14 have been successful and these have received over £26,000.
Pleasingly, quite a few of the requests were from known charities; schools or organisation with connections to the Rotary Clubs in our part of Gloucestershire.
It is a delight to report that the Friends of Sandford Park were 1 of the successful applicants. As a Club we have helped them with a contribution to fund part of 1 new bench in their gardens. The Jockey Club Grant will be enough to complete both.
And Belmont School, with whom we have had a long and successful association, have received £2,000 to update their library building and to restock with new books.
I would like to thank all the Club Rotarians who helped to promote this “win, win “ opportunity. And I am pleased to say there is still a substantial sum of cash left to hand out.
This will be awarded over the next Racing Season. Any help I can advise to further applicants will be easily given.

The Housing Problem A newly married couple viewed a house in the country and decided to buy it. After viewing it they suddenly remembered that they had not noticed where the WC was. So, they wrote to the vicar, who had shown them the house, asking him if he knew where it was. Being ignorant of the term WC the vicar thought they meant Wesleyan Chapel.
Imagine their surprise when they received the following letter:
Dear Sir, I regret the delay in replying to your letter but will endeavour to assist you. The nearest WC in your area is seven miles from the house. This is rather unfortunate if you are in the habit of going regularly.
However, it may interest you that my people take their lunch and make a day of it. By the way, it is made to seat 300 people, and the committee have decided to fit plush seats to ensure greater comfort.
Those who can spare the time walk, others go by train and get there just in time. I, myself, never go. There are special facilities for ladies, presided over by the Minister who gives them all the assistance they may need.
The children sit together and sing during the proceedings. The last time my wife went was some time ago and she had to stand up all the time.
Hoping this will be of some assistance to you.
Yours truly, 3 (Rev) E, Bogworthy
P.S. Hymn sheets are provided and are to be found hanging behind the door.
