Over two hundred spectators turned up outside Carterton Town Hall on Friday to support the intrepid 59 walkers who braved the hot coals for the Carterton Firewalk. Supported by the Carterton Town Council and organised by the Witney Rotary Club, this was a community event to allow walkers to raise sponsorship for their favourite charity or good cause.
So far, the fearless firewalkers have raised a spectacular £20,000 for local causes including the Carterton Mayor’s charity. After her walk over the coals, the Town Mayor, Cllr Kathy Godwin said; “I’ve had such fun and am delighted that we were able to bring such an exciting event to the town to raise money for local good causes. The sums raised for my charity, the Carterton Youth Fund, will make a real difference to our young people”.
Organisations who sent teams included: MyVision Oxfordshire, Springfield Primary School Witney, St John’s Church Carterton, West Oxfordshire Boxing Club, 1st Charlbury Guides, Windrush Valley Amateur Boxing Club, Carterton WI, Witney Swimming Club, Grapes and Tomatoes, and Lee-Chadwick Solicitors.
Robert Courts MP, Cllr Owen Collins, the Town Mayor of Witney and Keith Crawford, the President of Rotary all gamely rose to the challenge. After the walk, a relieved Keith said; “This is the most exciting evening that I have had for many a year. I’m so pleased that the Club has been able to organise such a successful event for the town. Thank you to everyone involved”.
